Green Cheek Conure Diet Plan

  Specific, formulated-pellets should be a part of every Green Cheek Conure and small parrot's DAILY diet (exception to Lorikeets). You should consult with your licensed avian vet before making changes to your parrot’s diet. Most avian vets advocate for fortified pelleted diets + veggies daily & some fruits ( again exceptions to Lorikeets).

Option 1 if feeding Zupreem Natural for Green Cheek Conures & like weighted conures:

• No more than 2 Teaspoons of Dry Zupreem Pellets

• 1.5-3 Tablespoons of Beta Carotene Rich Veggies (Acceptable daily veggies include: baked sweet potato, a bell pepper, broccoli, green beans, steamed carrots, butternut squash, - all items must be offered daily)

• Up to 2 teaspoons of Beta Carotene Rich Fruits (Acceptable daily fruits include: cantaloupe, banana, raspberry, pineapple, blueberry without the skin, papaya, mango no pits, kiwi, passion fruit - all items should be offered on a fully rotating basis as a treat, daily)

  It’s very clear, Rio is not alone in this; everybirdy loves a healthy seed! Rio absolutely adores THESE & always has. When I adopted Rio, making the move to pellets was very difficult! Did you know seed is like crack for parrots? It’s the equivalent of giving a small child mcd’s fries, all day, every day! Imagine what that would do to your parrot’s mind/body! No wonder they call parrots, “bird brains”! This particular seed helped us make the switch to pellets easier & now Rio only gets 2 of these per day, as treats, or when I’m leaving the house for a short run to the store. I must also declare, these have been excellent treats for training too! In the past I’ve successfully trained Rio & all the birds I’ve worked with, using these. I know you need some, so scroll to get your own. They also come in smaller batches if you want to try multiple flavors. The fiesta version is probably a close second to the original flavor for Rio the green cheek conure!

Healthy Treat for Conures

  I am a huge believer in all-natural, essential oils as part of a healthy, holistic lifestyle. Not only are these fantastic for us as humans - especially when you have sinus issues & you are looking for wellness options, but they work as excellent humidifiers for our parrots; when used properly & with parrot safe oils.

Remember to use all diffusers and oils responsibly. Also couldn’t hurt to talk with your avian vet before use!!

**Stay away from Tea Tree Oils & Eucalyptus. These are not parrot safe. It’s also important to remember small bursts on the diffuser is better in the long run than full time use. I always go with a more water than oil drops approach. This both spans the length of each oil bottle out, but also keeps the scents light & not overpowering (when too much is used, I get a headache, so the same holds true for your parrots health. Less is more.).

**Clean your diffuser weekly, if not sooner. This avoids mold growth & keeps spores from being released into the air / aka your parrot’s air passages!

**Never run beside your parrots cage. These units PACK A PUNCH. So much better & higher quality than any other oil diffusers I’ve used before. They can literally send this throughout a 1200 square foot home without issue, on a medium-low setting. Put these over 12ft away from your parrot’s cage/parrot in all circumstances & turn the knob lower if it’s producing too much.

**Use common sense. If your parrot starts sneezing or wheezing, discontinue use immediately & see an avian vet. This could be a symptom of an underlying respiratory issue, that presents as the lungs become hydrated.

Tricks for Treats

Everybirdie's favorite treat, Nutriberries! Did you know Nutriberries come in several different flavors and options? There are so many different combinations of flavors, it's very likely your bird will eventually take to one!

Nutriberry does not endorse me, but these are consistently Rio's favorite treat. I've used Nutriberries for over 10 years now for foraging, treat training and behavior correction. There's just enough crude fiber to make them a healthier alternative to regular sunflower seeds & enough added vitamins, minerals, & nutrients to act in a supporting role to your bird's primary diet, which should be fortified pellets + fresh veggies!

I am currently working on training Rio to not be afraid of my new fall nail color. It's working, slowly but surely!

Jungle House

 It's been my goal for many years now, to turn our home into a jungle - well, as close to a jungle as possible! It always feels so full with lots of plants. Did you know adding plants to your home actually improves the air quality too? This is so beneficial for both you and your parrot!

Rio loves the house plants. Something about bringing them into our home makes Rio more serene. Maybe it's the added air quality or maybe it's the option to have foliage to hide behind, regardless, Rio loves the house plants as much as I do. It's important to remember that most house plants are not bird safe for them to chew. If you plan to provide plants for your parrot to climb on, always check with the bird forums on google to ensure your plant is bird safe, prior to letting your parrot enjoy the foliage. My favorite parrot safe plant is the dragon tree!

Growing plants inside our home is one of my favorite past times. It requires very little work, just regular waterings, appropriate sunlight and normal plant TLC. Growing plants is not the only thing Rio & I are growing these days. We are growing our channel, growing our instagrams, and also teaching all of you how to grow your own socials, TOO!

Every Birdy's Dream!

Isn't this the dream of every birdy?! A gigantic tub of Nutriberries?! 

I know this is Rio's dream. However, Nutriberries & seed in general should be considered a parrot treat! Too much seed & not enough veggies, combined with a poor pelleted diet, can equal a very upset, cranky, parrot. If you're unsure what to feed your green cheek conure parrot, I would highly suggest this video.

It should be noted if you're having behavioral issues like biting, skittish behaviors, and general crankiness, you should definitely discuss the diet with your licensed avian vet to figure out the best action forward, to creating a happier, healthier life for your parrot. 

I always recommend 1-2 tablespoons of parrot safe veggies per day. I have more in this video here and more on this post over here about that. A balanced + fortified pelleted diet should be offered all day, along with fresh filtered water. Seeds are great in the diet in moderation, but only if you choose a healthier option. I am not endorsed by Nutriberries, but I do love them... as you can see, Rio does too! 

They offer great foraging options for parrot brain health & with several varieties to choose from, you can select the flavor of Nutriberry that is best for your parrot. I personally offer no more than 2 Nutriberreis per day to Rio, as a small green cheek conure parrot. Slightly larger parrots can eat more Nutriberries, so feel free to trial & error this process as part of the regular fortified pelleted diet. I prefer Nutriberries as a training treat, as well as a when I leave the house distraction. It helps make my absences a positive experience for Rio, which sets the mood for the time frame I will be gone. Even though Rio is almost 11 years old (wow I can't believe I'm saying that!), I still follow through with this routine when I'm leaving, by dropping a Nutriberry in Rio's bowl, as my parting gift. It's really worked!!

Tasty Morsel

 Fall nail art is coming in hot, just like Rio is for this nutriberry! Do you prefer to get your nails done or do you prefer to do them yourself? I love a good manicure, but having a parrot doesn't always mean it will last the test of time!! I usually paint my nails myself & if I find time, scribble some nail on art them. I'll link to the colors I used below, in case you want to try your own hand at this fall nail art.
